5 Essential Tips to Prepare For Your Upcoming Photo Shoot

So, you’ve got an upcoming photo shoot! Whether you’re capturing family moments, celebrating milestones, or simply creating memories with your loved ones, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves - especially if it’s your first session!

But don’t worry—we’re here to share our essential tips for preparing for your upcoming photo shoot.

From coordinating wardrobe looks to getting children to smile for the camera, we’ve got you covered!

Here are 5 Essential Tips to Prepare for Your Upcoming Photo Shoot

  • Dress for Comfort and Confidence

It goes without saying, but here’s a reminder: what you feel best in is what you’ll look best in.

It’s easy to get carried away with the excitement of a photo shoot and choose a fabulous outfit that’s less than practical. The best advice we can give you is to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident in your skin.

If you’re doing a family session, consider a matching look! Something simple and timeless is our go-to. Think blue jeans and a white button-down or coordinating a colour scheme.

Stay away from large logos and busy patterns. They can often be distracting in photos and take away from the real star - you!

Here’s a pro tip: If you’re shooting on location, be aware of the weather on the day of your shoot. Also, bring a pair of comfy shoes when changing locations during your session.

  • Scope the Location

That brings us to our next point. If you’re shooting on location, it’s in your best interest to do your research and make sure you know what you’re signing up for.

Does your location support your accessibility needs? Do you have to climb stairs to get to your destination? Is there parking readily available?

Time with your photographer is limited, so it’s best to know what to expect the day of your shoot so you can make the most of your session.

If you’re shooting in your home, you might think you’re off the hook for this step! But not quite.

Your attention should be directed to the room in your home where your photos will be taken. Do your best to tidy up and make the space look clean and aesthetic but also authentic to your everyday life.

This preparation will ensure you spend your entire photo session posing for the camera!

  • Remember to Bring Mementos or Special Items

Depending on the type of photography session you’ve booked, you may want to consider bringing special mementos or items to your photo shoot. It’s always a nice touch to add sentimental value to your photos!

Maybe it’s jewellery, a prop, or even a toy that holds memories for you. Incorporate these items in your images to make the most of your session.

They’ll add an extra special touch when you look back on the photos years down the line.

  • Keep Your Kids Occupied and Happy

If your photo shoot is with children, come prepared with activities to keep them busy between shots!

This is especially true for family days when you may take a few snaps without your kiddos. Equip yourself with toys, books and snacks to keep your little ones happy throughout the day.

If they’re young, you may want to bring a toy that will capture their attention when it’s their turn to pose. (Don’t worry too much about this step; your photographer will guide your little one through the session).

This also goes for fur babies! Our favourite types of sessions are the ones that feature your pets, but we know getting them to look at the camera is not always easy.

To prepare for your upcoming photo shoot, get your fur baby on their best photo-taking behaviour by coming stocked with lots of treats!

  • Trust Your Photographer

Above all else, trust that your photographer is there to make you shine!

Don’t get too caught up in striking the perfect pose. After all, natural translates best on camera.

Your photographer will guide you through your photography session, give instructions and ultimately bring your most authentic moments to life.

So show up as your true self and let your personality come through in the photos!
